This is a compact update of a book of readings on Latin American civilization which has been used by teachers and students since 1955. It takes into account current re-evaluations of the European discovery of the New World and includes new source material on Columbus and selections presenting varied viewpoints on Spain's impact in the Americas. Particular care has been taken to bring up to date the section on the 20th century, with discussions of Latin American debt, Panama, the 1990 election in Nicaragua and the civil war in El Salvador.
