One firm of elevator manufacturers offered it, and then in order to try and cover up his mistake, he told me date, time and place when such a commission had been demanded by an architect whose name you know very well. Is not this a shame; that men of a profession that is becoming daily more honored should stoop to such acts to eke out a few more beggarly dollars than their just and equable commission allows them? wb are wholly unable to understand the supineness of the profession in this matter of illicit commissions. It is Hu evil of infinitely greater virulence than is the competition evil, which absorbs to itself alone almost all the attention of those architects who do more than merely look out for their individual interests. In the early months of 1891 we "agitated " this matter with some persistence, aud yet we succeeded in drawing out an expression of opinion from only the following architects. "X. Y. Z." may have the satisfaction of knowing that the undermentioned architects at least share his opinion on this matter. As to the rest of the architects in the country, it seems only fair to suggest that the public would consider they stood in a less invidious position if they should speak out as individuals upon this point, or collectively through the Institute and its chapters.--Eds.
