That the steeple of St. Nicholas was indeed a beautiful and magnificent piece of architecture, and one of the great ornaments of their town, but yet should it be blown into atoms before ransomed at such a rate. That, however, if it was to fall it should not fall alone; that the same moment he destroyed the beautiful structure he should bathe his hands in the blood of his countrymen, who were placed there on purpose either 10 preserve it from ruin or to die along with it." Thus was the steeple preserved, to be a joy to our eyes even to this day. But a foe more untiring and unrelenting than any in human form, devouring Time himself, has laid his silent siege to it during the four centuries and a half which have elapsed since the munificent Robert de Rhodes erected it at his own charge, and presented it to the town. Small wonder is it then that now and again it has needed assistance to withstand the attack of its relentless enemy. The last time was some six-and-twenty years ago, when its restoration was attempted by Sir Gilbert Scott. That the attempt was not very successful is evidenced by the condition of the steeple at the present time, again encased in scaffolding and in the hands of the builders. This time the work is being carried out in a more thoroughgoing manner, the elements which formerly led to decay and disintegration are being removed, and there is every reason to suppose that when it leaves the experienced hands of Mr. R. J. Leeson, the well-known Newcastle rchitect, who is carrying out its restoration, the old steeple will begin a new lease of life, as stable and strong as when first, during the wars of the Roses, it arose amidst the other churches of the...
