This arrangement gives satisfactory results, 3. P. L. M. 1 In the case of short rails, the screw spikes securing the angular fishplates to the sleepers suffice for preventing creeping; but in the case of the 12, 18 and 24 metre (39 ft. 4 3/8 in.,59 feet and 78 ft. 9 in.) rails 2, 3 or 4 holdingdown plates are used which prevent any creeping. 4. Orl. 1 Angular fishplates taking against the chairs and the use of steel keys prevent creeping. 2 and 3. Creeping is affected by various influences; no conclusions can be drawn on the subject. 5 No. 2 The creeping is more pronounced on the outer rails of a line. 3 More pronounced on downhill gradients. 4" Less pronounced with good ballast. 5 No observations. Same answers as railway 4. 3 The rails creep strongly on steep descents where the brakes are often applied. 4 No observations. 2 The creeping is more pronounced on the outer rails. 3 On steep descents the fishplates somelimes act upon the chairs. 2 a) As a rule, both rails creep the same amount: b) on curves, the super-elevated rail generally creeps more. 3 As a rule, there is more creeping on falling gradients than on rising gradients or on the flat; there are local exceptions. 4 Impossible to determine; the lines with fast trains are all ballasted with hard broken stone. 5- No. 2 a) The left hand rail creeps more; b) on curves, the super-elevated rail creeps more. with sleep gradients; in such cases Stemmlaschcn (fishplates butting against the sleepers) are used which give a good result. 12 K.
