On July 7, 1838, President Van Buren approved an act "to revive with amendments an act to incorporate the Medical Society of the District of Columbia." The objects of the Society are "the consideration and promotion of all subjects connected with medicine and the collateral branches of the science." There were 21 original members in 1819 and 22 at the date of the reorganization in 1838. The present membership is 458, classed as 11 honorary, 394 active, and 53 members by invitation. Active members consist of medical practitioners residing in the District of Columbia. This Directory contains the names of active members only. There are no regular dues, but expenses are met by annual and special assessments upon the active members. There is an initiation fee of $5 for practitioners and $1 for licentiates of this Society. Regular meetings are held on Wednesday of each week at 8 p. m. Elections are annual. Officers were elected on January 6, 1909, as follows: President Edward Arthur Balloch Vice-Presidents. George Tully Vaughan, John Van Rensselaer Corresponding Secretary Thos. C. Smith Recording Secretary Henry C. Macatee Treasurer C. W.franzoni Librarian E. L. Morgan Board of Censors. Henry B. Deale D. Olin Leech Francis R. Hagner John F. Moran J. S. Wall PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY The Philosophical Society Of Washington was organized March 13, 1871, "for the purpose of free exchange of views on scientific subjects, and the promotion of scientific inquiry among its members." It was incorporated on May 15, 1901. There were 44 original members. The present membership is 160, classed as 150 active or resident members, and 10 absent or non-resident members.
