words: "Let us rather say--the Trinity, the Incarnation, the
Atonement, as still taught in the creeds of Christendom, are a part
of its early mythology, not yet outgrown. They contain deep truths,
and were useful to their day, ... but will gradually be lost from
men's minds, as the rush lights of human ignorance are extinguished
by the rising sun of scientific and religious truth." A few
scattering papers were contributed by clergymen and others, but the
chief points of the controversy are enumerated above The paper
contributed by the Editor of Eusebia, is reprinted entire from the

part in this controversy, we wish to avoid unnecessary personal
reflections towards Mr. Coyle or Mr. Wendte, or any other man.
Doctors of divinity are but men, whose opinions are only entitled
to superior regard, as they are found to conform to and reflect the
truth. It becomes a matter of anxious and careful inquiry whether
the old self-styled "orthodox teaching" on the subject of Christ's
divinity is the sense of the Bibte, or traditional vagaries, that
go to make the pseudo-Christianity of the Catholic church. In the
first place: we beg to reprove, as a friend should, Mr. Wendte, for
his discreditable treatment of the only source of our information
on this great theme. It is assuming too much for him to say, upon
the authority of any "higher criticism," that the statements of the
New Testament writers are at fault, either in part or wholly. If
there testimony is not wholly reliable, we have no means of
enlightenment. Mr. Wendte opens himself sadly to criticism, by
depreciating the witnesses by which he wishes to establish his
