In April, 1894, Mr. Lister was elected a member of the Tacoma city council from the seventh ward, defeating the Republican candidate in this, one of the strongest Republican wards in the city. In 1896 he was chairman of the Pierce county delegation to the People's Party convention held at Ellensburg; this delegation was the only one from a large county presenting a united front and succeeded in nominating the present Governor on the third ballot. During the campaign of 1896, Mr. Lister was secretary of the People's Party state central committee and a member of the joint executive committee of the three parties having charge of the campaign. The legislature of 1897 created the State Board of Audit and Control and he was appointed by Governor Rogers as a member of the board, and Commissioner of Public Institutions. Being the only member of the board receiving a salary, a large share of the work and responsibility of properly conducting the five institutions under the control of this board rests on him. HERBERT BASHFORD. Herbert Bashford, State Librarian, was born in Sioux City, Iowa, 1871. His parents removed to Ashland, Oregon, in 1879, and a year later to Tacoma, where Herbert spent his boyhood. He began a literary career at the age of fifteen and has contributed prose and verse to the New York Independent, Oritic, Frank Leslie's, Munsey's, Peterson's, Godey's, Overland Monthly and other periodicals. His poems have won him fame throughout America and he has the warm friendship of many of the leading authors of the day. H9 was wedded in 1891 to Miss Kinnie Cole, daughter of Senator J. A. Cole.
