It is worth a thought, whether this may not be the case in many other States and countries. The average age at death, in each of our two Periods, in each town and county, and for each sex separately, as well as for the two sexes taken together, will be found stated in the First Table for each Period, toward the right hand side. We need not repeat the figures there given. It appears that the general average age at death was, for the First Period 26.82 years, for the second Period, 27.60. For the whole nineteen months covered by this Report it was 27.36. In each period, it was more than two years longer for females than for males. For the whole nineteen months, the average age for males was 26.31, for females, 28.64. The Counties stand in the following order, as to average longevity, for the first Period, Newport, Kent, Bristol, Washington, Providence; the second Period, Kent, Newport, Washington, Bristol, Providence. In the former Registration Report, Newport county stood highest, and Providence county lowest. Not only does Providence county always show the least average duration of life, but the city of Providence, in each of the three periods referred to, showed a smaller average than its county. The highest average duration of life exhibited by any whole county for one of the three periods was reported from Newport county for the period June to December, 1853. This county then reported 33 deaths at specified ages, and the average age was fifty-seven and a half years, (57.51). The lowest average is that of Providence county in the First Registration Report, being just twenty-three years.
