The eireumstanees from whieh the engraving was designed were hriefly these: In the fall of 1773, lare quantities, of tea were j' imported into Button from England, hy mer-I ehants engaged in the Eisl lnd;a trade, hut hy I' eonsent and approhation of the ministry--whe were desirous, perhaps, of putting the temper ef the people t-another trial. Tho eolonies, espe-eially Massaehusetts, hud afforded a rent mar-I ket for the sale of this artiele. A drawhaek was j allowed in England on all whieh was exported, whieh was another indueement to send it to : Ameriea. The peopleof Boston had early notiee i I of the intended shipment; and a meeting was, held, nihen the agreoment not to purehase or uBt, I tea was revived, aud it was further determined that it -hould not he lauded. The eonsignees were desired not to reeeive it, nor allow it to he lakrn from the ships. They deelined making any sueh promise. A seeond meeting was ealled, when it was voted, " that the duty on tea was a tax on the people, imposed without their eonsent; ind that sending the artiele into the provinee, in tins manner, was an attempt to enforee the plan of the ministry to raise a revenue; and was, therefore, a direet attaek on the liherties of the people; and that whoever should reeeive or vend the tea, would prove himself an enemy to tho eountry." A eommittee of the town was again direeted to wait on the eonsignees, ...
