Hastings, for 18 years assistant United States manager of the North British and Mercantile, died on June 21 at the age of 63. He had been connected with fire insurance business 45 years. J. E. Plamp has been appointed special agent for the Atlas for Ohio and West Virginia, succeeding E. C. Cooley. Mr. Plamp will assist state agent J. M. Neuberger. He was formerly with a Louisville local agency. Human Side of the Bonding Business. The allegation most likely enunciated by a cynic or a grouch that " corporations have no souls," very often is refuted by reliable evidence to the contrary. The soul of a bonding company, for example, probably is known to many erstwhile erring ones as being an entity with something human at least in its make-up, as witness the following by " J. G. Y." in the Journal of the Fidelity & Deposit Company: There is a side to the fidelity business that is distinctly human, which is often made an instrument of service to an employer without his ever being aware of it. The surety companies often come into possession of information regarding an applicant, that if revealed to the employer through the same source, would prompt him to discharge or not employ one who might oftentimes become a very valuable man. However, by having the surety company between him and loss, an employer often has a most capable employee whom he would not have if he had to take the same chance as the surety company. The strange part of it is that the surety company does not consider that it is taking a chance.
