Hence "it is, that by viewing one single Line, we may' "learn almost whole Sciences in the Space of a 4t few Minutes; which Men could scarce compre"hend otherwise in as many Years. The Tranflator of this Piece has prefix'd thereto, a short Compendium of the Author's three Treatises on Arithmetick, Geometry, and Trigometry, in order to enable the Reader to proceed to his Algebra, without the Assistance of other Books, wrote purposely on those Subjects.. He He has likewise introduced his Doctrine of vulgar Fractions, for the fake of their Demonstrations, which are performed without Algebra, and also because from these there is an eafyTranfition to algebraic Fractions. With regard to his Geometry (wherein Mr. Wolfius sometimes ufeth Leibnitz's Method of Demonstration from Things being the fame Way determined, or rather, as he expresses it, from their Similitude) the Translator Mr. Hanna has omitted his Resolution of Problems relating to Distances, Altitudes, Areas, which required the Knowledge of Instruments and costly Figures, which would have enhanced the Price too much. But his Trigonometry being not only necessary in resolving algebraic Questions, but also useful to prepare the Minds of such as would study the Distance, Magnitude and Motion of the heavenly Bodies, Mr. Hanna has not only given a Method of constructing a Canon of Sines and Tangents, but also demonstrated the four Axioms thereof briefly. And for the whole Treatise, as it now appears, he affirms, that it is the fullest and compleatest Book in its kind in our Lang...
