The Boston & Westchester R.R. has built a railroad across both the farms, thus turning the farms into city lots. Mr. Miles also bought much real estate in the downtown section of White Plains which he has improved with modern business buildings. With his son Tod and Tod's brother-in-law, John Red mond, he expects to devote himself to real-estate after closing out the millinery business. A great many people think his realestate operations were lucky strokes on the part of Mr. Miles--however, they were carefully thought out and carried on through a series of years when others had no such faith in the future of White Plains. Mr. Miles has a mind which is as keen and clever at it is kind and witty. He will not bother with an overcoat and goes without one all winter. He always wears a cap. Every Sunday, not only in Summer but throughout the Winter, he goes down to Long Island Sound and has a swim. One quiet day when there was no one in the store he made a bet with a friend that inside of an hour he would have Broadway so crowded with people that the street cars would be blocked. He accomplished this by arranging a very clever window trim. In about thirty minutes the streets were so blocked with people that it was necessary to call out the police to clear Broadway and restore traffic.
