The legislature cannot be expected to take upon itself the work of harmonizing all these differences--and it would, in all probability, make a very bad mixture of it if it did. The fact that there was an agreement on common ground; that such basis of legislation met the aims of scientific medicine in the minds of the best physicians of the state, without regard to descriptive appendage, shows that it is possible to unite all influences in the support of a single measure. Even if it shall be found that agitation has so accentuated differences that were easily overcome at one time as to make them insurmountable now, it is wiser to concede something in the way of detail in order that success may be achieved. Now is the time to make the effort at unity. To wait until different bills have been prepared and support of them pledged will but invite another defeat. THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY ASSOCIATION. The next annual convention of the Mississippi Valley Medical Association convenes in Nashville on October 11. As the representative organization in the West of the medical profession, the association has been enabled to do great good in advancing the interests of scientific medicine. While the record of this organization shows a very creditable attendance--doubtless above the average of medical associations--it has not always been as large as all the circumstances warranted. Membership in an association has a two-fold value--that received and that communicated. Neither of these results can be achieved without active interest and personal participation in the work of the association.
