I would not limit to two months, or even six months, the period in which it is proper to try milder measures, provided the symptoms are controlled by such treatment. In cases of severe abscess radical treatment must be resorted to. The best I believe is to open directly through the skin into the sac and to pass the probe (5 or 6 Bowman) through this opening into and through the duct. If drainage be once established into the nose no lacrimal fistula will result, and the canaliculi will be left absolutely normal.
