Germany won its first ever Hockey World Cup championship with a 21 win over Australia, while the Netherlands defeated Korea 21 after extra time to finish third. In this tournament, the nations participating have been increased to 16 from the previous 12 and each squad can consist of 18 players instead of the normal 16 after the FIH considered the hot and humid conditions in Malaysia. The Qualification Tournament was held in Edinburgh, Scotland from July 17 to July 29, 2001. Below are the final rankings after the tournament ended; bold means the nations qualified for the final tournament: Five teams from the continental champions and seven teams from qualification respectively, plus three teams qualified from 2000 Summer Olympics and host Malaysia.
