Kulibayev has held several positions in important state-owned enterprises that manage Kazakhstan's natural resources, and has immense influence over the country's hydrocarbon industry. He is currently the deputy head of the state holding company Samruk-Kazyna and is chairman of the board of directors for Kazatomprom, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, and KazMunaiGas. With a net worth of $1.1 billion, he is one of the richest men in Kazakhstan. Kulibayev is often mentioned as a possible successor to Nazarbayev, however, as well as other relatives and associates of the current President Timur Kulibayev was born on September 10, 1966 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. His father, Askar Kulibayev, was a notable governmental figure, serving as the First Secretary of the Gurev (now Atyrau) Oblast branch of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, then later as the Construction and Material Resources minister. Timur's older brother, Talgat, is a general in the interior ministry. In 1988 Kulibayev graduated from Moscow State University with a degree in economics. He is married to Dinara Kulibayeva (formerly Nazarbayeva), the middle daughter of Kazakhstani President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
