Excerpt: Ben Sandford (born March 12, 1979 in Rotorua) is a New Zealand skeleton racer who has competed since 2002. He finished tenth in the men's skeleton event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Sandford's best finish at the FIBT World Championships was 13th in the men's skeleton event at Calgary in 2005. He finished 11th at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Sandford was a member of the Victoria University of Wellington Cricket Club in Wellington while attending the Victoria University of Wellington Law School. Sandford was right arm medium fast, generating considerable bounce from his tall frame. He also opened the batting with Treacle Chambers. Sandford was, and is still, known amongst the Wellington cricketing fraternity as Peg on account of his 6 ft 5 lithe frame. A chant of Peg was picked up by camera microphones at the start of heat 3 of the men's skeleton at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Due to his natural sporting talent, Sandford's introduction to Skeleton came after he led a Squash team representing Victoria University to an International University Squash Tournament held in Austria in 2002.
