Excerpt: The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) is an international tribunal for the prosecution under Lebanese law of those responsible for the assassination of Rafic Hariri on February 14, 2005. The tribunal also has jurisdiction over a series of other attacks in Lebanon (between 1 October 2004 and 12 December 2005) if they are proven to be connected with the Hariri assassination. The court is based in Leidschendam, near The Hague, in the Netherlands and it has a field office in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The tribunal officially opened on 1 March 2009. There was an initial three year mandate for the court and there is no fixed timeline for the judicial work to be completed, so the tribunal may be operational for several years.
