It was the second year in succession that 9am with David and Kim host Kim Watkins and Australian Idol host Andrew Gunsberg had hosted it. On December 9, 2008, the theme for the event was revealed to be "Creation" while the theme for the Lord Mayor's Picnic at the Royal Botanic Gardens was "The Magical Oasis." It is produced by Foti International Fireworks, which has done the fireworks for the event since 200001. Network Ten will not continue to be the official broadcaster of Sydney New Year's Eve, after their three-year deal expired. The rights will return to the Nine Network. It was also the first New Year's Eve as creative director for Rhoda Roberts. The celebrations kicked off at 8:30 PM AEDT with cheerleaders performing a karaoke classic, deciding not to use Auld Lang Syne, instead using an adapted version of a Toni Basil song, Mickey, with lyrics starting with "Hey Sydney, you're so fine, you're so fine, you blow my mind.."
