He was signed by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as an NFL undrafted free agent in 2004, after being selected in the Canadian College Draft. He played college football at Regina. Ryan has also played for the Green Bay Packers. Ryan attended Sheldon-Williams Collegiate in Regina, Saskatchewan, where he played as running back, placekicker and punter on the school's football team. He then subsequently played for the University of Regina Rams. In 2004, Winnipeg selected Ryan in the Canadian College Football draft in the 3rd Round, 24th Overall as a WR/Punter out of Regina. That year Ryan finished second in the league in punting average to Noel Prefontaine and ended with a longest punt of a whopping 92 yards. Winnipeg fans immediately took a liking to Ryan, and would come out to watch his spectacular punts. During the 2005 season, Ryan lead the league with a 50.6 yard average, while punting the most out of all league punters, 118 times.
