Not illustrated. 1911 Excerpt: ... of former laws. A misunderstanding seems to prevail that these laws emanated from the Buffalo Department of Health. This is erroneous. This department is only charged with the local enforcement of certain provisions. The laws were enacted by the state legislature. The issuing of labor certificates to children between the ages of 14 and 16 years, is still vested with this department, but under greater restrictions. The law also regulates the hours of labor at certain employments, prescribes how wages shall be paid, provides seats for female employes and compels shorter hours, regulates the employment of children in factories and covers a wider range than similar former provisions. Better Milk Production. In our crusade for a PURE milk supply, the results obtained, while not all that might be desired, have been fairly satisfactory, showing an increased disposition on the part of producers and vendors to co-operate with the department in its efforts to conserve the public health. Particular attention has been given to the condition of the milk upon its arrival in the city and. in all cases where it was indicated.' special investigations were made and personal instructions given to producers. In many instances, inspectors were specially detailed to farms producing milk, to determine and correct the causes of contaminated milk. Bacteriological examinations of the milk supplies show a continued improvement in the manner of milk producfon. and the fact that exceptionally few complaints have been received indicates a very satisfeetory condition. The spirit of eo-oneration between the producer and the department of health continues to grow, and this same spirit is pvi'lenced among our city milk dealers with but few exceptions, nnd these, more negligent than intenri...
