SURGEON TO THE MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL, LECTURER ON SURGERY, HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL. A. A description of the disease. In the Transactions of the New Haven County Medical Society at New Haven for the year 1788 the first recorded instance of infantile pyloric stenosis has been discovered. This record was that of Dr. Hezekiah Beardsley. The diagnosis of the condition was made by Dr. Beardsley before the patient died. The post mortem examination confirmed the clinical diagnosis. From the time of this first autopsy to the date of the second brilliant Connecticut case, recently reported in the Yale Medical Journal, 120 years have passed. This is a long and remarkably important period. I may, therefore, be pardoned for presenting to a Connecticut audience a paper upon this most interesting subject. It is each year increasingly evident that this disease is of great importance alike to the internist and surgeon. The signs of infantile pyloric stenosis appear unexpectedly. The baby is well at birth. Its alimentation is perfect. The mother' milk, its natural food, agrees. It gains each week its normal physiological increment in weight. Its fecal movements are regular in time, once or twice daily, a natural yellow in color, of smooth consistency and proper in amount for the weight of the baby.
