Not illustrated. 1856 Excerpt: ...we can commence on the winter grain or on a corn stubble field, and adapting the composition to suit its soil, we must also collect a sufficient quantity of seeds to suit the summer grain in heavy and light soils, and thus we will gain by it one year's observation and practice. We can also test the utility of the topseed mixture of grass seeds and plaut seeds, collected for the clover cultivation, or the mixed fodder cultivation, which will give in the result, a stronger, denser and heavier swarth, than clover alone, by the mixture of suitable plants and grasses for the soil. If we follow the instructions above detailed on a large scale, we will always find the result to be of a double quantity of grain and straw over the present mode of the various manurings of plaster, lime, &c. In seeding clover and pasture mixtures more densely, there will be an enlarged quantity of pasture and hay; whilst the manure to the soir will be much greater, and the soil remain purer, and cleaner, and more mellow. The promotion of the farmer depends upon the industry and attention given, in paying strict regard to the instructions above, so as to put down all he possibly can of his land in Green Manuring. As, for instance, if he sows the Green Manuring on ten acres, he will double his harvest. It is, therefore, highly important that early and strict attention be given to the collection of seeds, for there is no other method by which a farmer may enrich his soil so effectually, and render it productive, on so economical a plan. The following truths appear indisputable: 1st. The farmer can only promote his interest by the appropriate knowledge, care and local art, in the improved Green Manuring of the soil, and arrangement of the Topseed. 2d.
