Human life would not be the same without language communication. Sounds and symbols are the most basic characteristics of all languages, but the system by which these are linked to form meaning is conventionalised in very different ways. Many school-going learners in South Africa are currently not being instructed in their primary language for reasons that include the perception of increased economic opportunity that English gives.
