'Well, I shall go on with my work. I have no time to lose, ' said Audrey. She looked very busy. The table was covered with piles of linen, and she had a needle and thread in active operation. 'Sydney, open the door, or she will ring Sarah down-stairs, ' said Audrey, the next minute, in her usual elliptical style. The request was thoughtful, but so made that it seemed to make her cousin's visit an intrusion. But Frederika, all unconscious, said with a smile, 'Oh, thank you, Sydney, ' and entered the room with her usual pleasant ease. 'Good morning, Audrey, dear. Am I not early?' Audrey said, 'Good morning, ' and submitted to Frederika's kiss with no good grace. She was never responsive to the latter's demonstrations of affection. Audrey didn't see the use of endearments, and therefore she held them cheap. She complained that her cousin did not run in and out and bestow her greetings in Mary Pope's familiar style, but she forgot how little her own manner invited intimacy. 'How is Aunt Augusta? I have a message for her from mama.' Audrey swept off some yards of calico from the only vacant chair, and Frederika took it as an invitation to be seated. 'What are you doing, Audrey? You look full of business as usual.' 'I am putting in a gusset.' 'A gusset What is that?' 'This, ' said Audrey, holding up her work. Frederika laughed. 'I never heard the name before, and I am not much the wiser for seeing the thing. How many things you are wise in, Audrey dear, that I know nothing about ' she added, smiling.
