OURTENAY, what shall we do?" Margaret's white, hopeless face was
raised as she asked the question of her husband. "We can do
nothing, dearest," he said, kneeling down by her side, and taking
his baby's wasted little hand in his own. "But God can do anything,
even now." "My heart will break," said Margaret, pressing a kiss on
the shrunken little face which lay on a soft pillow on her knees.
"Oh that we had never come this voyage " "We must not lose our
confidence in our Father's love and care, darling," he said;
"nothing can happen without Him." "But if we had been at home we
could have had further advice, and ever so many things that I
cannot get for her in this steamer." "And do you think our Father
in heaven did not know that?" Courtenay whispered, while still he
gazed on the little face which had seemed to him, during the six
months it had been lent him, as the very apple of his eye. "Will
you pray for her again?" sobbed Margaret. "My heart is too broken
to do what I would; but I" Courtenay lifted his head, and put the
little hand he had been kissing, with his own, into Margaret's.
"Father," he said, "may Thy will be done. Spare our child if it is
Thy will; and if not, only keep her from further suffering, if it
be possible." He could get no further. Margaret only sobbed and
bent over their child; and he knelt on, praying inaudibly for
strength and resignation to do and to bear all that was before
them. An hour or more passed on. After that prayer the little one's
moans of pain got less and less; and still they watched, feeding
her at intervals, but seeing no improvement. The doctor came in and
out, with now and then a word; while Collins waited upon them, and
brought what they wanted, hardly noticed by the poor young f...
