Reviews

Why is it that when it comes to musicals: we always seem to be dictated to by certain "powers that be" as to what individual numbers from the show ultimately become hits, and what don't? There is much more to enjoy in this production beyond simply hackneyed songs like Tradition; Sunrise-Sunset and If I were a Rich Man. In fact, it's fullof good things! It won three Oscars; was nominated for several others as well, and went on to sweep the board with numerous other international awards. Yet in the time-honoured tradition that Canadians never seem to win Oscars: I'd like to point out that producer-director of this one, Norman Jewson, just happens to be a Canadian! Strangely enough, much of the storyline is based on actual fact. Chaim Topol is absolutely marvellous as Tevye the milkman (apparently is was a close call between him and Zero Mostel for the part), while several others in the cast - whose names are unknown to us in South Africa - had previously played their roles in the Broadway and other main-centre stage productions. The music (supervised by John Williams), photography, and Oscar-winning sound are as good as you'll find anywhere. Footnote: There is a non-musical film version of this one in existence, called Tevye and his Seven Daughters that is every bit as good! If/whenever it comes out on DVD: grab it with both hands and don't let go!
