Yiddish Books from the Harvard College Library (Yiddish, Microfiche)

Yiddish remains an indispensable tool for research into modern Jewish history, culture and thought. The decline of spoken Yiddish in the contemporary world puts increasing pressure on scholarship, which often lacks access to critical sources. In response to this need, the Harvard College Library and K. G. Saur Verlag have joined together to film non-copyrighted books and pamphlets of research value. These works encompass many areas: the Bible, liturgy, ethics, Jewish history and more. The largest section, Yiddish literature, contains inaccessible 19th century popular novels, confiscated Soviet publications of the 1930s, and out-of-print literary anthologies and scholarly studies of the interwar period in Poland. All these volumes reflect the complexity and diversity of Jewish culture. The collection is a necessary complement to libraries with an interest in modern Jewish studies.
