After the Death of Jojhua, no particular Person, that we read of, succeeded him in the Government; and therefore the most probable Opinion is, that every Tribe was govern'd by their respective Heads or Elders, and that in their Wars with the Canaanites they made them their Commanders; for it is to be obscrv'd, that a considerable Part of Canaan remain'd unconquer'd at Joshua's Decease. This Form of Government, or rather Anarchy, continued above thirty Years, till the Time of the valiant Otbniel, who was the first of those Governors of Israel, whom the Scripture calls Judges. During this Interval the whole Nation funk into an amazing Degree of Degeneracy and Apostasy, as if they had lost not only the Remembrance of Jojhua, and of their late solemn Covenant, but even all Sense of Religion, all Fear of God, or Regard to his Commands. Indulging themselves in loose Conversation, and making Intermarriages with the Canaanites, they were drawn into the most monstrous Idolatry, worshipping Baal and Ajhtaroth, and other Idols of the Heathens; which so provoked the Lord, that he left them to themselves, and, being destitute of...
