The idea of giant robots battling it out in metropolitan cities against giant monsters might sound like a match-up between Transformers
, and if it was directed by Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich, then that's probably how it would've played out. But Pacific Rim
is written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, (Pan's Labyrinth
; Blade 2
and the two Hellboy
movies), and as usual you're getting top-drawer visuals plus appropriate character development this time around.
After our planet has been attacked by giant monsters who've risen out of the ocean, the governments of the world are forced to come up with a solution, and it's giant robots! Each robot has to be controlled by two pilots, and this is where the character dramas stem from during the movie.
The movie is set during a pivotal period of the decades-long battle as the world governments are ready to throw in the towel due to heavy losses and exorbitant costs to keep the program running. A new plan is hatched to finish the battle once and for all, and the race is on to get the job done in the face of the increased attacks.
The storyline sounds simple and maybe even too foolish for some, but the best fantasy movies require suspension of disbelief in exchange for a thrilling adventure yarn... and Pacific Rim does NOT disappoint! It has great humour, terrific acting, and brilliant visuals. Oh the visuals... beautifully filmed fight scenes between monstrous adversaries and you are clearly able to make out what exactly you're seeing. (Unlike some other movies previusly mentioned... Cough! Cough! Transformers). This movie is fun, exciting and thrilling. Best described in one word... EPIC! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
When monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end.
To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.
On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.
Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Watched it last night and absolutely loved it! A masterful combo of Transformers and Godzilla. If you are a fan of Sci-Fi Action, then this is the film for you!
