He lived about ten years in England, together with his wife and family; all the while enjoying a place of profit which the King (James I.) had bestowed upon him. The best Life of John Barclay is that given by Dr. Irving in his Lives of Scottish Writers: Edinburgh, 1850, vol. i. p. 371. Lord Hales had previously written and privately printed a careful and exact summary of his life, in 4to. J.
