Four strong and urgent voices are raised in this issue of the Quarterly to discuss the recruiting and training of the ministry needed by the churches and mission fields everywhere, especially in the West. Representing both eastern and western schools where they received their own training, these men from their strategic points of view in Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska and Iowa, voice the demand which the country-wide field makes upon the church and its colleges and seminaries. That men who are doing some of the best work now being done in the most exacting fields, should grapple so closely, fearlessly, independently and hopefully with the problem of ministerial supply is in itself an indication of the turn of the tide. That from such widely scattered localities, on three separate occasions, and each man speaking only of the situation as he sees it, they should agree so strikingly in their diagnoses and their suggestions, gives a weight to their words which may well arrest heedful attention. We welcome their constructive criticism both for its own suggestive value and because of the ratification it gives to the action by which Chicago Seminary had already anticipated the demands of the times, which these friendly critics so clearly see and so faithfully formulate. Facing new facts in the old spirit. As it enters its fiftieth year, Chicago Theological Seminary confronts the same problem which called it intoexistence, and in the spirit of its founders it faces the solution suggested and made imperative by the demands of the very different situation confronting their sons.
