Kate Kinsella may not have enough work, but she can always use a holiday, so the message on her answering machine seems a godsend. Nigel Carter, who runs the Uplands Lodge Hotel on the Isle of Wight, has disappeared, and his elderly aunt, Elizabeth Forrester, is more than a little concerned. It is a job, but since no one other than Aunt Elizabeth seems worried - Nigel's partner, Stewart Michaelson, and the hotel's permanent residents, Nancy, Harold and Margaret, are all quite calm - Kate envisions a couple of easy weeks before Christmas leisurely exploring the island and getting paid for it.
