Where a single authority has been drawn upon for critical notes, the name has been given, and often reference to the source itself will open up the subject in much fuller detai1. Any who are interested to pursue the subject farther will find these works of reference at their disposal in various libraries of the city, particularly in the Public Library, the Mercantile Library, and the library of the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. In the descriptive memoranda relating to the pictures exhibited, and the notes offered as to the artists and their work, by the Curator of the Museum, it is only aimed to be suggestive, to aid the memory, and to make a record of the collection. No attempt has been made to characterize the art authoritatively, and the limitations of an individual student and the necessary haste are pleaded for shortcomings which will be obvious. As an interesting and important record of many lovable art treasures of St. Louis is made by these exhibitions, a memorandum of the works shown last year is added as an appendix to this catalogue. In last year's exhibition we felt ourselves fortunate to be able to include several paintings by Professor Halsey C. Ives, who died shortly before the installation was undertaken. It is regretted that the devotion of Professor Ives to the organizing and executive work of the institution, whose upbuilding was his work, and to such other services to American art as were involved in his labors as Director of the art department of the Columbian and Louisiana Purchase Expositions, and several undertakings on behalf of the government, so completely swallowed up his time and energy that canvases from ...
