When Paola Dantes husband Daniel de Luc disappears from a cruise ship en route to St Helena, the mystery begins who is Daniel, really, and what will Paola find if she investigates further? In this teasing literary mystery, the reader must play detective, alongside Elijah Bloom, the PI that Paola hires to find Daniel. This is no straightforward suspense novel, however instead, Roland plays a literary parlour game in which nothing is quite as it appears. For one thing, the story begins with Paola in the limbo of a coma, having been hit by a car, and the novel is variously a love story (with a nod to Mills & Boon), crime fiction of the roman noir variety and postmodern pastiche. Yet as we trawl through the past (Paolas memories, newspaper clippings, letters, extracts of the crime novels Daniel writes, the confessions and stories of many characters) a strange tale of longing emerges. Can Paola navigate the shadowy world of erotic commerce and emerge unscathed? The first book in a trilogy, Lady Limbo teases the reader with unanswered questions but one is willing to dwell in mystery to find out if Paola can make the transition from limbo to paradise.
