children.'" When the figure had finished, she knelt down, crossed
herself, and appeared to pray with great earnestness: for the first
time since she entered the chapel, she shewed signs of the deepest
emotion; she cried bitterly, and while one hand was raised towards
heaven, the other was stretched towards me. The whiteness and
surpassing delicacy of her hands struck me with admiration, and the
expression of her face and ner attitude was quite divine;
expressive at once of the most ardent charity, and of the holiness
which God the Creator alone can give. When she had continued in
prayer for a few minutes, her countenance assumed a ray of
ineffable joy and tranquillity, and as she rose from her knees she
gave me a look whose celestial expression I am quite unable to

some satisfactory conclusion after all I had seen and heard. The
arguments, both Catholic and Protestant, came into my mind with a
force and clearness quite supernatural. I was quite puzzled...
