Think not, however, that, because deep convictions of sin have sometimes left the soul unsaved, that this is their necessary, or even their usual termination. The reverse is the fact, for the deeper the impression, the more probable is its endurance. Backsliders and apostates are much oftener found among those whose claim to discipleship was associated with no very strong emotions, than with those whosecreligious history was marked by more striking features. And occasional cases of failure, wherever they may occur, are not the rule, but the exception. Of those whose powerful religious impressions excite the hopes of the faithful, a few may draw back unto perdition, but all the rest believe to the saving of the soul. Infer not, then, that appropriate evidences of faith are usually sought in vain; or that, at best, the proofs of conversion are unsatisfactory and inconclusive. Amidst all its imperfections, the Christian church still reckons among its members not a few who not only have eternal life, but who know that they have it. The testimony of their conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, NOT ALWAYS EVANESCENT. 105 not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, they have their conversation in the world, 2 Cor. i. 12, coincides with the higher witness of the Holy Spirit, and proves them "the children of God," "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people," Rom. viii. 16. 1 Pet. ii. 9.
