He comes of age and goes out to find his fortune in Lynchburg, Virginia in the early 1800's. His first job is to be an overseer to the slaves of "Annie's Garden." While he is there, he finds his self sympathizing with the slaves to the point that he becomes as "one of them." Seeing the abuse they receive, he realizes that their only hope of survival is freedom. There are over one hundred slaves so he has his job set out for him. Can he succeed? They have to overcome many hardships including the cruel abuse by the Master's son. Portrayed are the victims of rape, murder and insanity, as well as the recipients of love, compassion and hope.
