It flows from the Puketoi Range in the northern Wairarapa, initially flowing southwest (this stretch is usually known as Makuri Stream). after some 15 kilometres it turns northwest, reaching the waters of the Tiraumea River five kilometres southeast of Pahiatua. New Zealand (Aotearoa in M ori) is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands. The country is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island nations of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga.
