Not illustrated. 1801 edition. Excerpt: ... EARTH, and all things that are therein; the feas, and all that is therein; and thou filleft the whole with life; and THE INHABITANTS OF THE WORLDS worihip thee." Job, Ch. i. v. 7. And Satan anfwered the Lord and /aid, from going to and fro in THE EARTH, and from walking up and down in it." This has been held by commentators to be a defining of the very limits of Satan's power, which is here reprefented as being exerted only on our Earth. As we have been led to apprehend, that other worlds may have been expofed to his feductions, fee p. 58, (though no fuch matter is exprefsly revealed;) it may be as well to obferve here, that, in regard to the hiftory of Job, Satan's power over our Earth is clearly all we could have to do with; more efpecially if we take into account the verfe immediately following this, where Job is particularly pointed out as the moil perfe t, not in the whole creation, but on this Earth: one of the race of Adam; but yet fo upright, having fo juft a fear of God, and fo fteadily " efchewing evil," as to be an overmatch for all the artifices and wiles of Satan. In the twelfth chapter, verfe 16, there is a fublime account of the wifdom and power of God; "with him is ftrength and wifdom; the DECEIVED and the DECEIVER are his." This paflage is particularly noticed by Biihop Sherlock, as levelled againft the prevailing error of two principles. Now, the evil principle was, I believe, commonly reckoned as a rival power, in refpeft to the whole creation. The learned Biihop, however, illuftrates this paffage by another, ftill more remarkable; ch. xxvi. "By his fpirit HE God hath garniihed THE HEAVENS; his hand hath formed THE CROOKED SERPENT." And he obferves, that this is introduced among many other magnificent images..."
