Gwynneth burst into tears. Though a very intelligent woman, she was not a wise one, and she had no smattering of the art of managing a man. Mrs. Frisby, old as she was, could have given her points on this score, and still have won in the competition; for the excellent Caroline had never been handsome enough to rise superior to feminine wiles.
