This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ...Manuscript of the XIV century written by an Italian scribe upon 204 leaves of vellum, and adorned with 18 historiated capitals, and 8 fine decorated initials in blue, red, green, cream, etc., mostly with elongated side decorations, also numerous ornamental initials in red and blue. Folio, wooden boards, covered with leather, with bosses and corner-piece, 350. This fine manuscript contains the musical service for saints' days from Easter to Advent. The fact that great prominence is given to the service for St. Francis shows that it was executed under Franciscan Influence, and as the name of St. Cesario appears at the Dedication festival, it is probable that the volume was written for use at Terbacina, either for the cathedral, which was dedicated to St. Cesario, or else for the Franciscan monastery at that place. The miniatures and decorations are finely executed and of an unusual character; the miniaturist has used a light brown colour relieved with faint decoration of light lines and curves instead of gold for the backgrounds, which has a very pleasing effect. The following is a list of the historiated miniatures: --1. Saint Anthony, with a child saint figured in the margin at the bottom of the decoration. 2. St. John the Baptist. 3. St. Peter. 4. St. Paul. 5. Mary Magdalene anointing the feet of Christ. 6. The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence. 7. The Assumption of the Virgin, who is between two angels; she drops her girdle to St. Thomas below. 8. The Beheading of St. John the Baptist. 9. The Virgin Mary. 10. St. Michael slaying a dragon. 11. St. Francis and the angel, and a smaller miniature of St. Francis and the birds below in a circle. See iixus-TBATION FACING PAGE 1. 12. St. Martin dividing his cloak to give to a beggar. 13. St. Cecilia. 14....
