The acronym CHNOPS, which stands for carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur, represents the six most important chemical elements whose covalent combinations go to make up most biological molecules on Earth. Sulfur is used in the amino acids cysteine and methionine.
