Excerpt: ... CONVENTlON REPORTS. A STATEMENT TOUCHING PAROCHIAL REPORTS DRAWN FROM THE JOURNALS OF THE DIOCESE OF MARYLAND. Journal, p. 3. 1 1790. In the Convention of the Diocese of Maryland the Constitution and Canons of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the-United States framed and ratified in the late General Convention 1789 were read, referred to a Committee, examined and assented to on the principle that the Diocese of Maryland was bound in so far as said Constitution and Canons did not contravene the instructions given to the Maryland Delegates to the General Convention. Whereupon, with the exception of the "Declaration of fundamental rights, &c." the Constitution and Canons of the Diocese of Maryland were "expunged" and re-enacted. Canon i. "To give effect to XV Canon of General Convention Now Title i, Canon 14, v, r" it is ordered that Registers be kept. Canon IV. requires that the "Amount" of these Registers, vir: "of adult persons, of baptisms, marriages and funerals, and of Communicants shall be returned by every Minister to each annual Convention." 1791. Reports of the Members of the Standing Committee and the "Amount" of the Registers "were called for and some of them were produced and read." "Ordered, that they be preserved among the Records of the Convention." 1792-The same order was passed. At this Convention Bishop Claggett was unanimously chosen. 1793. Resolved that the several clerical members report the Amount of Registers. 1795-Further ordered that the reports be entered in the Book provided for the purpose. 1796. The Committee on State of the Church report: "Whereas the Vestry Act passed by the previous Assembly has effectually provided for the keeping of Registers..., it appears inexpedient to continue the XV Canon of the General ...
