Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...the old banner of St. George, the patron saint of England, which served for centuries as the standard of the nation, from whose bishops the right reverend fathers derived their succession. The blue chief is the type of heavenly purity and innocence, and the Holy Lamb a universally recognized emblem of our Lord. The key, pastoral staff, and mitre are the insignia of the episcopal office, and indicative of the right of our bishops to assert the validity of their orders (Fig. 463). The seal thus described is used by the Right Rev. David Buel Knickerbacker, D.D., Bishop of Indiana. Especial attention is directed to the personal sea of the Right Rev. Charles Todd Quintard, S.T.D., LL.D., Bishop of Tennessee. It will be noticed that below the shield a decoration is suspended from a ribbon. This is the Cross of the English Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. It is an eight-pointed white cross with a gold crown above it. The Prince of Wales is the Grand Prior of the Order, and Bishop Quintard has been for more than twenty years a Chaplain. The order is that of the Knights Hospitallers of the old Crusades (Fig. 464). The seal of the diocese (Fig. 465) is described on p. 204. Fig. 466 represents the seal of the Right Rev. Thomas A. Starkey, D.D., Bishop of Newark. The key symbolizes the power and commission given to the Apostles, of binding and loosing, opening and shutting. The scroll is supposed to contain the words of the apostolic commission, conveying the power of the keys. The device at the bottom is the symbol for " Our Lord Himself, and is placed Flg there because He is the ' Root of David' and the Sure Foundation." The Right Rev. Alex ander Burgess. S.T.D. I.L.D., Bishop of Quincy. Official seal. The Most Rev. Patrick John...
