Excerpt: ... our Society we have professionalism--pastoral, evangelistic or anything else--whenever it becomes merely a profession, we shall lose the value of its power in the same way. In regard to the thought brought out by Charles Tebbetts, it brings this thought very clearly to my mind that we have not thus far employed, except in a very scattering way, our young people in the Bible School and Christian Endeavor. Another point: we should bring the teaching power of the Church to the front. The great Churches that have used the catechism and confirmation have evangelized and had great numbers, and the great Methodist Church has its place because of its evangelizing work, but we cannot follow Methodists very well because we do not place the pastor in the same relation at all, nor do we have any body in the Church to take the place of the Methodists' bishops, so it is wholly unfitted for our organization. Perhaps it is undesirable to have any form of catechism or confirmation. But is there not some way where we can get at evangelistic work through teaching, that will give us the benefits of both of these methods. We have been copyists largely in these last days. But I trust that this Five Years Meeting will adopt some such method, such as we had in the earlier days when the father and the mother talked freely in the home concerning the teaching of Friends and the views of Friends. Until we attend to this I do not see how we can come up to Robert Pretlow's high level, but when we shall have attended to this, I think we shall see a broader way before us.
