Not only the learned, but the multitude became thereby acquainted with the subject of the quarrel; even in the neighbourhood of those very monks of Cologne Reuchlin's works were eagerly read; a Colognese senator could repeat whole paragraphs from the Augenspiegel, which he constantly carried about with him in his bosom, a sign how far this dispute had extended already. From many quarters partisans and friends wrote to Reuchlin, wished him success, and expressed their joy that he abided by truth, and ventured to oppose the feared and hated monks. As falsehood never rests, but when one device and fraud is frustrated, seeks another for the sake of vengeance, the Dominicans now adopted a new species of violent measures. The detected lying priest Peter Meyer announced from the pulpit, that at the festival of St. Mary Pfefferkorn would preach from that place, and he invited his hearers to this invective. This was again an unheard-of liberty taken by these begging monks, for in any other case they would have stormed if a layman, still more a married man, had mounted the pulpit, yet they not only tolerated but upheld this illegal proceeding. Reuchlin still lived in hopes of an accommodation although determined not to give way in any manner inconsistent with truth; how was he astonished 0 Defens. contr.
