The Soul's Profit and Loss Not long ago one came to me in resentful perplexity over this statement from the Gospel of Matthew: "Unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath." "Now," said this person, "if this is the law of life, then life is cruel; and if this is the law of God then God is unjust." If we are to understand the sentence we must study the story. Jesus has just been exhorting his hearers to exercise constant fidelity. His word was "Watch." Be on the alert. Life is full of opportunities that come sometimes when we least expect. Don't play the part of the foolish virgin who goes to sleep with no oil in her lamp. Be constantly on the outlook. Watch For 1K --well, life is like this: "A certain man was about to go on a long journey into a far country and he called his own slaves and delivered unto them his goods. Unto one he gave five talents (approximately five thousand dollars) to another two and to another one, to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey." We must all recognize the analogy so far as true to life. One, two, five talents. A billion people on earth at this moment and no two alike "We hold this truth to be self-evident; that all men are created free and equal," announced the "Declaration." That may be a self-evident truth as the author intended it, that all men should be free to make the most of themselves and ought to stand equal before the law, but standing in a bald and unrelated statement it is not a self-evident truth but a selfevident falsehood. Equal Three children were born this morning within a mile of this church. One is born to parents of superior intelligence. From a long line of ancestors he has inherited a strong...
