High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A baronet (traditional
abbreviation Bart, modern abbreviation Bt) or the rare female
equivalent, a baronetess (abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a
hereditary title awarded by the British Crown known as a baronetcy.
The current practice of awarding baronetcies was originally
introduced in England and Ireland by James I of England in 1611 in
order to raise funds. A baronetcy is unique in two ways: It is the
only hereditary honour which is not a peerage, and so never
entitled the holder to a seat in the House of Lords. A baronet is
styled "Sir," but a baronetcy is not a knighthood. It ranks above
all knighthoods except the Order of the Garter and the Order of the
Thistle. The recipient of a baronetcy does not receive an accolade
and so is not dubbed, in contrast to one who receives a knighthood.
