The vast majority of American Hindus are Indian Americans, immigrants from India and Nepal and their descendants, besides a much smaller number of converts. While there were isolated sojourns by Hindus in the United States during the 19th century, Hindu presence in the United States was virtually non- existent before the passage of the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965.
